Cosmetic SurgeryVarious forms of cosmetic surgery procedures are used for the reconstruction of an area of a persons body, for example a person who has suffered a disfiguring accident, or has been burned badly will often undergo procedures associated with cosmetic surgery, however when these procedures are used for purposes other than vanity they are referred to as plastic surgery procedures, rather than cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery as we know it today was pioneered by Sir Harold Gillies, a surgeon who operated during the first world war and became widely known as an innovator in the field of plastic surgery as he pioneered many reconstructive techniques which greatly improved the lives of many soldiers who had been badly disfigured or burned during the conflict. Gillies performed many skin grafts and refined the techniques used for such a procedure and his methods were highly influential on the development of the modern skin graft.
After the war had ended his kept his surgery open and eventually his reputation caused people to approach him, frequently famous actors and actresses seeking his services in order to enhance their appearance, and some of the procedures he performed on these patients were amongst the first instances of modern cosmetic surgery. Sir Gillies was also incredibly ahead of his time and carried out some of the earliest examples of sex change operations.
